The Rifle Range
If you’re ascending The Wrekin via the Beech Avenue northwest of the Halfway House, you might be forgiven for wishing you’d brought a tin helmet. Fear not, for despite the foreboding warnings of live firing, guns have not been discharged in earnest here since at least 1980. The remains of the rifle range, which was once used by the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, are located further south on the perimeter footpath encircling the base of The Wrekin. The site itself, which is Grade II listed, has survived the ceasefire well and the remains of shooting butts and targets associated with it are still very evident.
