St Lawrence’s Hill and Dairy Pit Coppice
St Lawrence’s Hill lies between The Ercall and The Wrekin, and backs directly onto the Forest Glen car park. It’s best accessed from Ercall Lane, where the views from the heavily wooded summit provide an interesting variation on a theme established by its better-known bedfellows. Amid the enveloping bracken, relic tracts of the same lowland heath that exists atop The Wrekin can be found. Immediately to the east of the hill is Dairy Pit Coppice, which takes its name from a mysterious ring of earthen mounds surrounding a murky pool. Myths and legends of ghosts and mermaids abound here but it’s likely the remains of a long abandoned bell pit explain its unearthly appearance!
