Maddocks Hill
Maddocks Hill is situated southeast of The Ercall and, like its cousin, has endured the relatively recent ravages of stone quarrying, which has laid its central third very low indeed. The quarry floor has now been overtaken by pioneering woodland and this is an excellent spot to look for roving flocks of seed-feeding finches in autumn and winter. Springtime brings many new spectacles, too, and open sunny spots attract wildflowers (including common orchid) and basking slow worms.
